Handgun Courses

Although often considered by some not to be the best choice of weapons for personal defense, handguns may in fact be the best choice at the time of a confrontation or the only weapon available. To that end one should know how to defend one’s self effectively with a handgun. All handgun courses include the base skills of safe handling, admin and action loading, malfunctions, drawing, tactics and flashlight use. Also covered will be shooting with movement and manipulation skills development. Courses are declared as Defensive in nature because the courses advocate using handguns to defend one’s self as compared to a sporting application. Semi-automatics or revolvers are acceptable. Variations of the handgun courses include:

  • Defensive Handgun – DH

  • Course addresses basic skills of safety, drawing, loading, and malfunctions as well as some advanced skills such as distance firing, shooting and moving as well as other issues for defensive use of handgun. Course includes basic tactics and low light handgun operation. Although many people own them most do not effectively use them.
  • Nominal 800 rounds of ammunition. $980
  • Defensive Handgun 2 – DH2

  • Course addresses basic skills, Defensive Handgun skills and update or upgrade of already acquired skills. Advanced issues such as advanced timing and tactical problems related to defensive use of handgun are addressed. Course includes grounded and or injury drills. DH1 or DCC recommended as a pre-requisite.
  • Nominal 900 rounds ammunition. $980 Defensive Concealed 80
  • Defensive Handgun 3- DH3

  • DH3 is part 3 in the Handgun series. Students should be prior Thunder Ranch Defensive Handgun 1 and 2 graduates in good standing. The course will include, but not limited to shooting from cover, lateral movement, use of flashlights both handheld or weapon mounted, communication with a teammate, off hand shooting, single handed operation and manipulation, malfunctions, and multiple moving targets. DH3 Class expends 50% more ammunition than a standard Defensive Handgun so be prepared for such. DH3 offers more tactical runs in the Terminator as well as low light runs. DH3 also offers a higher Instructor to student ratio.
  • Nominal 1500 rounds $1500
  • Ladies Defensive Handgun – LDH

  • Course addresses basic skills of safety, drawing, loading, and malfunctions as well as some advanced skills such as distance firing, shooting and moving as well as other issues for defensive use of handgun. Course includes basic tactics and low light handgun operation. Although many people own them most do not effectively use them. This is a Ladies only course and focuses on improving fundamentals.
  • Nominal 800 rounds of ammunition. $980
  • Defensive Concealed Carry- DCC

  • Course addresses basic skills of safety, drawing, loading, and malfunctions as well as some advanced skills such as distance firing, shooting and moving as well as other issues for defensive use of handgun. Course includes basic tactics and low light handgun operation. Course addresses methods of and techniques for carrying a handgun concealed in warm or cold weather based on client requirements. All training and skills addressed in DH are covered in this course only from a concealed carry format.
  • Nominal 800 rounds of ammunition. $980
  • High Intensity Tactics – HIT

  • HIT Class as the name implies is High Intensity application of Marksmanship. Students will engage targets and extended distances and apply personal tactics both as individuals and as a team. Students should be prepared for a physically taxing course at high altitude and MUST BE PHYSICALLY FIT AND CAPABLE. Students should be prior Thunder Ranch Defensive Handgun 1 and 2 graduates in good standing. The course will include, but not limited to shooting from cover, lateral movement, use of flashlights both handheld or weapon mounted, communication with a teammate, off hand shooting, single handed operation and manipulation, malfunctions, and multiple moving targets. HIT Class expends 50% more ammunition than a standard Defensive Handgun so be prepared for such. HIT also offers a higher Instructor to student ratio.
  • Nominal 1500 rounds $1500
  • Home and Vehicle Defense with Trauma Block- HVD 4 Days

  • HVD addresses where we spend a majority of our time- at home and in our vehicles. There are certain idiosyncrasies that need to be addressed in regards to manipulation in and around vehicles. Students will receive instruction blocks from Defensive Handgun in safety, admin and empty loading, presentation, use of cover and movement. Application of these skills will occur on the range and from vehicles. In addition instruction blocks of tactics as they would apply to your home environment. Ballistic Trauma and tactical medical care instruction is presented by tactical emergency medicine physicians on gunshot wounds and emergency care. Trauma instruction will be proofed and polished with student practical applications on the range. HVD&T offers a higher instructor to student ratio and is now 4 days. Combining this information and skill base creates an extensive and highly technical course. Basic First Aid Certificate is required prior to class.Course fee includes student’s IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) with Tourniquet ($200 value).

  • Defensive Team Tactics – TT

  • Team Tactics is geared for family member teams or law enforcement officers to acquire skill in the use of tactics and firearms together to resolve confrontations. Strong emphasis is placed on safe storage, safety, handling, and application of tactics inside close confines and restricted space. Instruction in cover, movement, multiple threats, communication as well as presentation, malfunctions, and shooting on the move will be covered. *This is a handgun format but can be taught with rifles as a Tutorial.
  • Nominal 800 rounds $980
  • COMBO COURSES- and VARIANT COURSES

  • At times classes are offered in new variations and combinations. Such as adding a Trauma Block, Vehicles, or Specialized Tactics of instruction to a DH, DH2, or UR Course. For the best description of these course look at the base courses that are being melded.
  • Defensive Revolver – R

  • For over 150 years the Revolver was the personal protection standard when a rifle was not available. Although considered archaic or outdated by some the revolver continues to handle and excel in running cartridges that are advantageous for personal protection that are can’t be handled in auto pistols. In the hands of knowledgeable persons the revolver is more than an equal of any other defensive handgun. This course addresses the techniques and idiosyncrasies of the revolving handgun for personal defense.
  • Nominal 700 rounds of ammunition. $980
  • Defensive Concealed Carry with Vehicle Defense & Back Up Gun- DCCV BUG

  • Course addresses basic skills of safety, drawing, loading, and malfunctions as well as some advanced skills such as distance firing, shooting and moving as well as other issues for defensive use of handgun. Course addresses methods of and techniques for carrying a handgun concealed in warm or cold weather based on client requirements. All training and skills addressed in DH are covered in this course only from a concealed carry format. DCCV & BUG includes a Vehicle Defense block of instruction which addresses Back Up ankle guns. Solid Ankle Holsters recommended for course.
  • Nominal 800 rounds of ammunition, plus an additional 100 rounds for your Back-Up Gun (900 total). $980

Rifle Courses

Rifles are the individually operated choice of weapons systems for personal defense. A rifle in the hands of a skilled owner can generate a person who can effectively control close or far personal defense environments. All rifle courses include the base skills of safe handling, admin and action loading, malfunction clearance, deployment, tactics, and low and altered light application. As well the use of cover, concealment, shooting with movement and manipulation skills are covered.

  • Urban Rifle – UR

  • So you bought a rifle. Now what? A rifle without an owner who can correctly drive it is worthless. Before you load it with unnecessary accessories or options learn what you need and what you don’t through experience. Logic is the foundation of the school and Knowledge is its’ tenet. Created in 1983 this course is still the one most copied but not duplicated by other institutions. Urban rifle is the cornerstone of the personal defensive doctrine of this school and has been since the schools inception. Very simply this is the way to defend yourself with a rifle in what most people would consider handgun distance. Generally for magazine fed iron sighted rifles but other rifle types accepted. Low powered or dot type optics permitted but it is recommended that backup iron sights be available somewhere on the rifle.
  • Nominal 900 rounds of ammunition. $980
  • Urban Precision Rifle- UPR

  • UPR is fusion of Urban Rifle and Precision Rifle while keeping the rifle platform of Urban Rifle it holds to a higher standard and responsibility of impacts. It takes the shooter from applying marksmanship from pristine range positions to field expedient and practical applications through realistic building facades and cover on the move. All shooting is precision shooting, but sometimes that shooting needs to be surgical. This course covers that. Low powered scopes or dot optics with magnifiers are acceptable. Bolt guns are also welcome. Drills will include safety, movement, cover, moving targets, hostage type targets, firing from elevated platforms and reactive targets.
  • Nominal 700 rounds. $980
  • Long Range Scoped AR15 Course – LRAR 2 day

  • AKs are also acceptable for this class. This course will extend the distance of your AR platform out to 700 yards with primary focus inside of Danger Close distance (0-300). Students will see the true capability of their rifle and scope combination in what most people would assume is only attainable with a large caliber bolt action. Ammo suggestion would be like a 70 or 77 grain TSX. Optics with target turrets and MIL reticles are highly recommended but not required for the course. Low powered dot sights with magnifiers are also acceptable but have limitations at extended distance. 1-4x & 3-9x power for optics are recommended for reaching extended distances.
  • Nominal 500 rounds of quality ammo. Frangible is NOT needed for this course. $900
  • Mid-Range Rifle Course- MRRC

  • Mid-Range Rifle extends the range from 100-700 yards in the field. This course will extend your will to 700 yards with primary focus inside of Danger Close distance (0-300). Students will see the true capability of their rifle and scope combination. Students will be introduced to team spotting and giving corrections and calls for their partner. In addition students will gain knowledge from exposure to shooting in cross winds and dialing scope corrections/DOPE. Primary focus is from prone but drills will include field condition application from modified positions. This course is also beneficial for hunters to get data on their rifle at extended distances. . NO MAGNUMS. Good scopes mounted to a strong action are advisable.

  • High Angle Rifle Training- HART 4 days

  • HART is the next step in the precision rifle series that stretches the reach of the of the shooter with their rifle. YOU MUST BE PHYSICALLY FIT AND CAPABLE to hike at high altitude for extended periods of time carrying your own rifle, ammo, gear, and water for the day. Most packs weigh at minimum 35 pounds fully loaded. Be prepared for a physically taxing course. HART class includes flat range work from pristine positions for the first two days of the class then places students in field expedient and practical shooting positions at intermediate and extended distances for 2 more days. In addition to flat range data students will experience and gain data from altitude while engaging targets at extreme angles with heavy and ever changing wind. Students must ensure their rifle is in sound working order with the ammunition they intend to bring (NO MAGNUMS). Students SHOULD come to class with a 100 yard zero already established in the rifle with the same ammunition and load they intend to shoot in the class. Students must also bring all necessary tools and wrenches to ensure their bases, rings, and scope are properly mounted and torqued daily. Students MUST also bring their manual for their scope and ARE REQUIRED to read their manual twice PRIOR to coming to class. Rifle packs that allow for hands free climbing are recommended. Mid-Range Rifle Course is recommended as a prerequisite.
  • 500 rounds, NO MAGNUMS. $1500
  • Urban Rifle 2 with Vehicle Defense- UR2 VD

  • Urban Rifle 2 with Vehicle Defense addresses where we spend a portion of our day; in and around our vehicles. This course is offered ONLY to Thunder Ranch students that have completed Urban Rifle in good to excellent standing and have used their time since to actually practice. Documentation needed. This is not a basic rifle operation course. We will confirm your zero on day one and move forward with other material. If you do not have a zero on your rifle or know what a zero is then the answer is NO. If you have not touched your rifle since you left Thunder Ranch three years ago, then the answer is NO. If you have taken a rifle course somewhere else and want to slide in here when you have not taken Urban Rifle, then the answer is NO. If you do not have an ink signed Thunder Ranch Inc. certificate from Urban Rifle Course, then the answer is NO. If you think no one will notice or confirm your application, then the answer is NO. Read the fine print here: URBAN RIFLE (Texas or Oregon) is A REQUIREMENT, PREREQUISITE, PRECONDITION, CONDITION, CRITERION, MUST, NECESSITY, QUIALIFICATION. UR2VD is a new course with new material, it is not a venue for practicing what you did in Urban Rifle. It will include a REVIEW of material, such as safety, loads, malfunctions, movement, cover, communication, methods of carry and deployment and move forward with new material. It builds on top of the established Urban Rifle Principle and Doctrine. It adds manipulation, deployment, shooting, and movement in, around, and from vehicles. Students must be in good physical shape and be able to sprint 50 yards at high altitude.

Specialty Courses

  • Private Tutorial 2 Day

  • Tutorials are offered to meet your specific needs and concerns. These courses are 1 on 1 with Clint. You design the class and we will teach it. The benefits of the Private Tutorial is the personal time and instruction that is geared to you and you alone. This also allows you to control who is in class with you. These courses can be booked separate or added on the front side of your regular Thunder Ranch class to work on different weapon system or bring you up to speed for a class that you are attending. This also allows you to create a combination or multi-firearm class. Examples include 2 day Pistol Tutorial prior to an Urban Rifle Course, or Pistol/AR Tutorial before Mid-Range Course. Class is limited to one type of firearm per day. Due to the small size it is possible to shoot more in a two day Tutorial than in a standard 3 Day Course so it is also useful if you are short on time away from home or work. Class size is limited to 6 students. $6000 for full class up to 6 students. Ammunition based on weapon and duration.
  • Advanced 1911 Diagnostic Course- 1911 2 day

  • The Advanced 1911 Diagnostic Course is a 2-day class that guides the student through the operation and functional details of the 1911 pistol as well as the steps to properly fit key reliability components to the gun. The first day is spent in the classroom studying the operating cycle of the 1911 pistol while identifying key functional aspects and learning the basics of how a properly set-up 1911 should be. Topics covered on day one will include:
    • Complete disassembly of pistol

• Detail discussion of each part with explanation of proper fit and function

• Firing cycle of 1911

• Common parts breakages and what to look for

• Malfunction diagnosis

• Understanding basic extractor tuning and geometry

• Proper spring weights for various calibers and sizes

• Safety checks

• Firing pin safeties pros and cons

• Functional differences between Government Model / Commander Model / O-ACP

• Magazines – what works and why

• Reassembly of pistol

• Proper maintenance and lubrication. Building on the topics covered during the first day, the second day continues in the classroom with the students learning to replace/modify components of the gun that are often encountered as sub-par or with a higher than normal failure rate.

• Overall reliability inspection In an effort to limit the variances found over the wide range of 1911 brands, makers, sizes, and configurations the course will require the student to bring an all steel 5” 1911 in 45ACP that uses the conventional Browning designed barrel/bushing configuration.
