Urban Rifle November 16

Course Description

So you bought a rifle. Now what? A rifle without an owner who can correctly drive it is worthless. Before you load it with unnecessary accessories or options learn what you need and what you don’t through experience. Logic is the foundation of the school and Knowledge is its’ tenet. Created in 1983 this course is still the one most copied but not duplicated by other institutions. Urban rifle is the cornerstone of the personal defensive doctrine of this school and has been since the schools inception. Very simply this is the way to defend yourself with a rifle in what most people would consider handgun distance. Generally for magazine fed iron sighted rifles but other rifle types accepted. Low powered or dot type optics permitted but it is recommended that backup iron sights be available somewhere on the rifle. Nominal 900 rounds of lead free/frangible ammunition. $980

What a fantastic course! I’ve taken a couple of TR classes (Defensive Handgun and Long Range AR) but was always trying to find time to take Thunder Ranch’s “flagship” course, Urban Rifle. It was well-planned down to the smallest details, with a well-thought out checklist reminding the student what to bring and what not to bring. The first day started with a classic Clint Smith 3 hour lecture on theory, followed by zeroing our rifles then shooting from 25, 50 and 100 yards prone and kneeling. The second day we added the barricades and team activities. We were privileged to shoot in the Terminator, TR’s state of the art shooting house. The final day we continued challenging shooting positions and also shot in the woods at the Adam Brown Memorial Range. Clint, Heidi and the staff were gracious and always helpful. Safety was emphasized heavily and repeatedly throughout the course. The emphasis of the three day class was to teach us to fight safely and effectively with a Stoner rifle, and in my humble opinion, they knocked it out of the park. I would wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone with an open mind who wants to learn more about shooting the AR and hitting the target.

I’ve wanted to take this class for about the last 3 years, so going into this class I had very high expectations… With that said, Clint and the Thunder Ranch staff TOTALLY blew my expectations! They were incredibly hands on and knowledgeable! Urban Rifle was centered around the use of an AR-15 carbine at ranges of 7-100 yards, with multiple target engagements, use of cover, reloads, and working with teammates. Clint is hilarious as well at the same time which makes learning easy for me! Everything taught was precise and on point! Taking one or multiple Thunder Ranch classes will definitely provide you with gunfighting and lifesaving skills! I”ll be seeing you guys next year and every year to follow! Thanks again Clint, Heidi and TR Staff! – Josh

What a great time I had. I could have set there and listen to Clint talk all day and learn as much as I did shooting. Great staff and great NEW Presidente.
Best facilities I have ever shot over. I have already booked another training and going back in 9 days.
    Thank You

Everything about Thunder Ranch was world class. Urban Rifle was 3 days of pure fun. The instruction was excellent, the facility was top notch and the Smiths are two of the finest people I have ever met. I highly recommend this course, wether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran.

Just completed TR’s Urban Rifle class with my girlfriend. I’ve attended about 1/2 dozen classes myself but this was the first time that I’ve brought “a date”. First may I say that she was treated so well I couldn’t have been more impressed. While not new to firearms this was her first Rifle class and Clint, Heidi, Roger, Brandon and Brian couldn’t have been better. Thank you TR staff.
Having been thru a few TR classes I would say that UR is among the best I’ve attended. Instructors are awesome, the instruction is first rate, and the facilities are outstanding.
    I will be back…..

I just completed Urban Rifle 08/17-08/19. Here is a review that I hope will help anyone contemplating attending this class: The facilities are amazing…. nicest and cleanest place I’ve ever trained. The classroom seats about 15, so the classes aren’t huge, which is a good thing. The buildings and ranges all reek of passion for teaching this art and of patriotism. They expect you to keep your guns clean and working, take care of the facilities, and be on time, but they reciprocate, by doing their part to give you every opportunity to learn. All of the staff, including Clint and Heidi themselves, give lots of personal attention and care about your improvement. My advice is to book your class early as they sell out quickly as well as flights and lodging. As for lodging, I stayed at the Interstate 8. It was okay, but the Fremont is a much better deal if you can book early enough to stay there. Lakeview is a really small town and has no Wal-Mart, but a good hardware and grocery store. Don’t count on being able to find any specialty gear in town. I strongly recommend investing in some good quality knee AND elbow pads. You will be doing a lot from prone on gravel.
The temperature was a nice 60-85 over the three days, but it’s the high desert and drinking lots of water is important! I recommend at least a gallon each day. For what it’s worth the range’s water is excellent and very soft, great for drinking. Most the class is 25-100 yards with some 1-15 yards, some 100-150, and one 225 yard shot in the class I took, so don’t be afraid to bring an iron sighted rifle… you’ll be fine. Don’t bring finicky competition guns, though. Leave those at home and bring the good ol’ reliable mil-spec stock rifles that you aren’t afraid to lay on the gravel or get wet and dirty. This class is about learning to fight with a rifle, not competing or any of that game-playing. The class instills that mindset, so come ready to learn that way. The first half day is classroom and you won’t want to miss any of the wisdom Clint throws down, so come rested and ready to listen and learn.

The staff is first class and very helpful. Their hospitality is above and beyond. The students I trained with all seemed to seize the opportunity and were very supportive. I highly recommend this class to any serious student of the art. It will bolster the knowledge of ANY rifleman.

I don’t think there are words to describe the quality of information, training, and attention to detail these trainers give each one of their students. What a great way to continue to build a knowledge of shooting and tactics. Wonderful people all around and I will be going back for a different class.

UR is a class I’ve been waiting to take for awhile and I came with a few buddies. The course is excellent and you will improve no matter your experience level. Simply, I’d say this course is 3 days of world class teaching at a world class facility from world class instructors. The facilities are immaculate and Clint Smith’s use of fact blended with humor for instruction is both entertaining and inspiring.
Initially, there is plenty of range work on fundamentals from 5 yds to 100 yds. There is great instruction and practice on reloads and malfunctions as well as team drills and shooting from concealment behind obstacles. Of course, safety is always prioritized. The grand prize after 2 days of training is the final day where you go onto the Adam Brown Range for some longer range action to about 200 + yds as well as simulated engagements around props and a unique experience engaging targets through the woods. Also, there is some difficult to replicate tactical teaching in the Terminator shoot house.
Heidi, Roger, Brandon, and Brian were all excellent as well being patient, instructive, supportive and demanding all at once. I can’t say enough about Clint and Heidi’s wonderful welcoming hospitality. Everyone who owns a rifle should learn from this class at least once. Met a lot of great classmates during the course as well. I enjoyed a ton of fun and learning. I plan to return for more.

Recently completed ‘Urban Rifle’, Clint’s ‘signature’ offering and my third class at Thunder Ranch Oregon. As with the previous two classes, I was elated at how much I learned in only 3 days and sad that it was over so soon. Clint, Heidi and TR staff instructors (Roger, Brandon & Brian for this class) were, as always, superb in their teaching (it was great to have Heidi on the line more than in previous classes). Instructions were consistently clear, concise and easy to follow. When needed, corrections were always delivered in a constructive manner. Student’s questions always received prompt, complete, no BS answers. During every minute of the 3 TRO classes I’ve completed , the instructors insisted on the following three priorities: Safety, Marksmanship, Safety (in that order).
Day One: Lecture- great information as always. Be advised: when Clint warns you that “pistol brass is hot, but rifle brass will ‘STICK & BURN!’, he’s not exaggerating. I have the scars to prove it. Any tiny opening in clothing/gear (elbows) will be discovered/exploited by hot brass- yours or a classmate’s.
After lunch, class met on the square range. Focus on fundamentals of marksmanship/various shooting positions, establishing/confirming zero, allowing for ‘offset’ on close-range targets. Techniques/skills are introduced in a logical order, each building upon the previous technique just learned.
Day 2: shooting with movement, Terminator run, barricade drills with 2-man teams. Again, each new skill building upon the last one.
Day 3: more complex barricade drills, moving to & making maximum use of cover while safely & effectively engaging targets. Then Thunderville runs. After lunch, class resumed on the Adam Brown range. All previous techniques/skills were brought together here, as students completed a variety of drills, both individually and as teams.
In summary, this class was of tremendous value to me. I’ve owned/used an AR for years, but didn’t realize I was still a ‘newbie’ (“you don’t know what you don’t know”). Now I actually know how to use it correctly & effectively. Fantastic group of students too! Each just as eager to learn, as the TRO staffers are driven to teach.
Training under Clint, Heidi and their extraordinary staffers was an unforgettable and invaluable experience. I hope to return again someday (after diligently practicing at my home range all they’ve taught me).

I can’t say enough about Thunder Ranch! First class course, first class facilitates and first class instruction. I came out with a new respect for our AR. Thank you Clint and Heidi for doing what you do.

Bottom line, you WILL be more prepared to defend yourself with a rifle if you take this class. I cannot say enough good things about Clint, Heidi, and the staff instructors.
Also, no matter how awesome Clint’s rants are online, there’s nothing like hearing them in person.
Can’t wait to take another class.

October 2017 Urban Rifle – What a phenomenal experience! The quality of the material, the presentation, and Clint’s “delivery” ensure an enjoyable and fun time. The training is well worth the investment. This was my second class at TR; and just like the first class, this one exceeded my expectations. Clint, Heidi and the entire staff did everything possible to ensure we learned our rifles. As always, I learned a great deal and was shown the “little” things that might save your life or one of your loved ones. I also found out that I had more bad habits than I realized many caused by previous training that was not correct. By the end of the course, the rifle did what I wanted it to do every time! I cannot wait for my next visit. Semper Fi Clint!
