    Defensive Hand Gun Course
    Lakeview, Oregon

The first hand gun class of the 2017 season April 13-15th started off with gusto. We had rain, hail, snow and sunshine. Sometimes all at the same time! But there were 13 troopers ready to take on the elements. I have been coming to Thunder Ranch Oregon for several years with my husband but this time my step-daughter decided she wanted to come and see what her dad and I had been talking about all these years. So we girls headed to Oregon so she could meet Clint and Heidi and staff at Thunder Ranch Oregon leaving dad home to mind the ranch.
The first day we gathered at the office for a meet and greet of the staff, fill out forms and then Clint and Heidi come in to welcome us all there and you instantly feel like they have just invited you into their home. Then Clint begins his lecture on the class and procedures of Thunder Ranch. Having been to many of Clint’s lectures it is still like listening for the first time all over again. Clint is very passionate about what he does and what he stands for. He has a way of driving a point home without intimidating you or making you feel uncomfortable but it is point you soon won’t forget. Clint is a wealth of knowledge and loves to share that with his students to make them feel part of the team. Safety is the number one topic during the entire lecture. Many examples are given and explained as to why safety is so important and makes you aware of the importance not only at Thunder Ranch but when you leave and go back to your normal routine to carry that safety knowledge with you. Being the Defensive Handgun Course we had a lot of first timers to Thunder Ranch in a class size of thirteen. There were four ladies and nine guys all ranging in many levels of firearms experience. There were sworn police officers, ex-military and civilians all here to learn from Clint, Heidi and staff. Even with experience or no experience Clint treats everyone the same. Follow the rules and no one gets hurt. Please.
During the lecture Clint focuses on Logic. What makes sense and the why. The purpose of the course are well explained in the handouts you are given. Clint starts setting the stage to get you in the proper mind set to handle your firearm and yourself in a professional, safe manner at all times not when you are just at Thunder Ranch but in the everyday world we live in. Once the classroom lecture is over we break for lunch then all head to the range to start the handgun training. Once on the range Clint and the staff are very focused and dedicated to make sure safety is top priority at all times no exceptions. No matter your level of experience on the range you are all treated the same. Clint, Heidi and staff all work with you one on one throughout the entire 3 day course. For the novice students a little more time is spent with them to make sure they are comfortable with the training and what is expected of them. For the more experienced to pro’s they help you better your technique and your marksmanship. Because even if you have been shooting for a very long time one has a tendency to pick up bad habits over time that may not even be apparent to you so it is always good to go back to the basics every now and again to eliminate those bad habits and what better place than under the watchful eye of Clint, Heidi and staff. And I do mean watchful eye!! Even the slightest error is quickly corrected and explained as to what just happen and how to fix it regardless of your experience. You should never stop learning.
After battling the elements for two days the third day produced a gorgeous sunny Oregon spring day so we could all strip a few layers of clothing off and continue working on our marksmanship and techniques. It all goes by way to fast but you leave Thunder Ranch with a greater understanding of yourself and your abilities and how you would handle yourself to protect your family and your life if you ever have to encounter an unavoidable threating situation. Think logic! Think and plan ahead now as Clint would say.

Thank you Clint, Heidi and staff for a wonderful time on the mountain. I do believe we have created another Thunder Ranch junkie! My step-daughter is already planning on coming back as soon as she can swing it with her work schedule. She thoroughly enjoyed herself and came away with a confidence and respect she had never experienced before with handguns. God bless you all and thank you!

The Thunder Ranch Defensive Handgun course I attended in April was an interesting experience. Students ranged in experience from seasoned law enforcement officers to literal beginners like myself. When I signed up for the class I was worried that I would be in over my head. I picked up a handgun for the first time 2 months ago, only had basic NRA safety training, am 60 years old with a bad back… seriously, a poster child for “beginner”.
Over the 3-day class my skill set improved dramatically, and while challenged, I was never in that “over my head” situation that I feared. The instructors were attentive, provided constant feedback and were supportive throughout the duration of the course. The course had a great balance of didactic training, hands on new skill development and well paced practice of key techniques, always under the watchful eye of Clint, Heidi and the team. This was a course built on great insights into adult learning, personal motivation, respect for history and safety safety safety.
The course progressed from hit the target, to hit a zone in the target, hit the zone while moving, hit a quadrant of the zone, hit a small circle in the zone, to hit the same hole with a second bullet. The bottom line is that every student got better, learned new techniques and even the beginner was able to zero in on the last task.
I’ll not soon forget standing in a snow flurry watching flakes land on the hot barrel of my handgun, creating a surreal steamy snowing look down the sights! Priceless.
Great course, great team and a great value.
