If you own a shotgun and might possibly use it for defense, this class is for you. Rick Staples and Clint Smith taught a great class. The shotgun, although a brutal weapon system, requires complex manipulation with ammunition management and knowing exactly how different types of ammunition pattern in your particular shotgun. After three days of instruction, drills and manupulation, I am more confident in my ability to utilize this weapon system effectively.

I highly recommend this course to anyone that wants to learn about fighting with a shotgun. This was my first course at Thunder Ranch and it will not be my last. First off I am very happy with the emphasis that was placed on safety during this course. Clint and Rick gave an awesome demo on day one that really put into perspective the damage a shotgun will do at close range. This point was emphasized several times each day as a reminder of what can happen if you ignore a safety rule or choose to be careless. I never felt that anything done during the course put anyone in harms way, there was a high number of instructors at all times to keep the course running smoothly. This was a factor that made me choose to train at Thunder Ranch, Clint and Heidi have put together an excellent team to provide the best possible training environment, that is safe and effective.
My only prior experience with shotguns was skeet shooting while in boy scouts. I had a shotgun setup for home defense but was not confident in my ability to use it effectively. This course really focuses on fighting with a shotgun, and all the things that need to be considered when using a shotgun to defend oneself. Clint and the other teachers made the point that a shotgun is a thinking mans gun, and they couldn’t be more right. They really make you think, and stress that you need to know what is going on with your gun and what condition it is in. I learned more about shotguns in 3 days than I have in my entire life. This course showed me what I need to work on and where my current skill level is at. Each drill we did had a point and was used to teach something different. My only gripe is that I wanted do some of the drills a few more times, but I am still very happy with what we were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time.
As far as the whole crew at Thunder Ranch, they are simply the best. They are all excellent teachers and make everything clear, concise, and to the point. They are happy to answer questions and make an effort to help each student understand errors so that they can self correct. If you are considering this course at Thunder Ranch, just do it. It is outstanding.
